National Forest Tapajós
National Forest Tapajós is a Brazilian conservation unit, created by Federal Law on 19 February 1974. Its area is 545 thousand hectares, approximately. Located at west of Pará state in Brazil, involving the counties of Belterra, Aveiro, Rurópolis e Placas. Limits to Tapajós River, BR 163-Santarém-Cuiabá road and with Cupari river.
The forest is administered by the Brazilian Instituto Chico Mendes.
A Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA) project is quantifying the net ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide and water in a primary Tapajós forest site, defining the net source or sink of from the undisturbed forest.〔http://atmos.seas.harvard.edu/lab/brazil/index.html〕
This LBS is an international research initiative conducted by Harvard University and Brazil's National Institute for Space Research(INPE), focusing on how changes in land use and climate will affect the chemical, biological, and physical functions of the Amazon region and the global climate.〔http://atmos.seas.harvard.edu/lab/exhibit/lba.exhibit.html〕
